The Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregiver Support Program is designed to expand community awareness and support continued research of Alzheimer’s Disease. Alzheimer’s Disease is a form of Dementia which worsens over the course of time impacting intellectual acuity and ultimately restricting the day to day function ability of individuals in advanced stages of the disease. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Early signs of Alzheimer’s can be seen in the mid to late forties and early fifties, becoming progressively worse with time. In support of Alzheimer’s Research, Rho Psi Omega participates in Seniors Morning Out and the Longest Day Alzheimer’s Fundraising program in support of additional Alzheimer’s Research and support for families impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority continues in its efforts to increase the emphasis on the importance of diet, exercise, and hypertension management as we launch our newest stroke and heart disease prevention awareness campaign. Rho Psi Omega participates in benefit walks in order to raise funds for health-related charities and to increase awareness of health conditions that disproportionately affect African Americans. Our goal is to raise at least $1,908 for each walk, while also promoting personal fitness and sisterly interaction.
Our current benefit walks include:
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Walk sponsored by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society
Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
In addition to various walks to promote health and wellness in the community, Rho Psi Omeg
also encourages heart and stroke awareness. Rho Psi Omega actively participates in the annual American Heart Association’s Annual National Wear Red day event in our signature “Pink Goes Red” for Heart Health Day in support of the continued fight against heart disease in women.
Millions of Americans of diverse populations are impacted by mental health conditions. Mental Health Conditions span a wide range of conditions including: anxiety disorders, behavioral disorders, eating disorders, mental health and substance abuse, mood disorders, personality disorders, psychotic disorders, and suicidal disorders. In advocacy of and to raise awareness of the impact mental health has on the surrounding community, Rho Psi Omega participates in a Mental Health Awareness Seminar to enlighten the community an opportunity to learn more about mental health issues.
